About the Galapagos Islands

The Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) has carried out research for the conservation of the Galapagos ecosystem for almost 50 years. CDF is a world-class research organization with a record of excellence and the world leader in scientific information on Galapagos.

Galapagos Conservancy (GC), formerly known as Charles Darwin Foundation, Inc., advocates for the lasting protection of the Galapagos Islands through programs of constituency building, education, and fundraising in North America. GC raises more than $2 million annually to fund the conservation work of the Charles Darwin Foundation (CDF) and the Galapagos National Park Service (GNPS), and supports local actors in Galapagos that work in partnership with the CDF and the GNPS. Galapagos Conservancy manages $4.5 million in endowed funds to support conservation in Galapagos.

The Galapagos Islands (Spanish names: Archipiélago de Colón or Islas Galápagos, from galapago, “saddle”- after the shells of saddlebacked Galápagos tortoises) are an archipelago made up of 13 main volcanic islands

The Galapagos Conservation Trust (GCT) is a UK registered charity (registered number 1043470) set up to raise funds for, and awareness of, the conservation needs of the Galapagos Islands. GCT was launched in April 1995 at the Royal Society in London, with the aim of conserving the ecosystems and biological diversity of the Galapagos archipelago. GCT works with the key institutions in Galapagos.

World Atlas Sitting right atop the Equator, approximately 600 miles directly west of Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands had no original inhabitants, and were discovered in 1535 by Tomas de Berlanga, the Spanish Bishop of Panama, when his ship drifted by the islands.
