January is a wonderful time to visit the Galapagos Islands. Warm temperatures, calmer seas and the start of the lush green season create ideal conditions for wildlife encounters, snorkelling and relaxed island exploration. It’s a particularly popular month for travellers seeking comfortable weather and vibrant animal activity both on land and underwater.
January usually sees the start of the rainy season which is mostly limited to the lush highlands, whereas the coastal areas remain drier.
The waters around Galapagos are warmest during this period with better visibility making it one of the best times for snorkelling.
Thanks to the arrival of the first rains, all the terrestrial fauna such as finches, mockingbirds, land iguanas and lava lizards start courtship and raise their offspring in order to take advantage of the short season which provides an abundance of food for them. With animals focused on breeding and feeding rather than migration, encounters remain close-up and plentiful.
Green Sea Turtles begin to arrive to lay eggs on the sandy beaches in Galapagos
Marine Iguanas on Espanola begin their breeding season and become brightly coloured (green, black and red).
Marine life thrives in warm, clear waters – ideal for snorkelling with reef fish, rays and sharks.
