Housed in a historic 16th century mansion in the bohemian San Blas neighbourhood of Cusco, this 14 room hotel has been beautifully restored to its former glory with stone patios, hand crafted balconies and a host of other original features. The hotel’s restaurant and bar are a great addition to the hotel. We particularly like the bar area which features a fire pit, which is a great detail on the cooler nights in Cusco. The hotel is part of a local hotel group which only owns and operates 3 other hotels (one in Lima and the other on the coast of Peru). The hotel has a reputation for excellent customer service, and good value for the quality of accommodation and character of the hotel.
Set in the bohemian arts district of San Blas, just four blocks from the main square, the Plaza de Armas, it sits amongst some of the city’s oldest ‘Casonas’ (Spanish for large and stately traditional home). San Blas itself is a great neighbourhood to walk around, offering beautiful panoramic views, great bars and restaurants and is largely free of traffic.
The San Blas area of Cusco is tucked away to the northeast of the main Plaza de Armas. Following the Spanish Conquest this neighborhood became a colonial parish with strong colonial architectural influences. Although like most of Cusco now, it does have quite a lot of tourist footfall, it does seem a lot quieter than other parts of the city. Any of the streets to the north of the Plaza de Armas will take you uphill – but definitely worth it, especially if you take the ancient Incan road Hathunrumiyoc (Quechua for ‘great stone street’) which takes you towards San Blas. It is home to the famous 12-angled stone, which is set into one of the best surviving walls in Cusco.
