Sacred Valley of the Incas

One of the key areas of the Inca civilisation

The Sacred Valley of the Incas

North West of Cusco you will find the breath-taking Sacred Valley of the Incas. This is one of the key areas of the Inca civilisation, renowned for its agreeable climate, fertile lands and the waters of the sacred river of the Incas, the Urubamba River.

The Sacred Valley of the Incas is the perfect area to learn more about Peru’s ancient civilisations, taking you through some beautiful ruins, like those at Pisac and Ollantaytambo and indigenous Quechua communities, direct descendants of the Inca, who work the fertile lands in the same way they have for centuries.

An ancient civilisation

The Incan Empire was the largest empire ever seen in the Americas and the largest in the world at that time extending across western South America from Quito in the North to Santiago in the South. The Inca civilisation arose from the highlands of Peru in and around the Cusco area where it flourished between c.1400 and 1533.

Unfazed by the often harsh Andean environment, they successfully and rapidly conquered people in landscapes as diverse as mountains, deserts and tropical forests. Their amazing adaptation of the landscapes to their purpose with terracing, roads and mountaintop settlements such as the iconic Machu Picchu continues to impress modern day visitors.
