Southern Andes

Explore dramatics scenery and authentic indigenous markets

Explore Ecuador's avenue of Volcanoes

Some of Ecuador’s most dramatic scenery is in the Andes to the south of Quito, in the ‘Avenue of Volcanoes’, including the imposing snow-capped peaks of Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. The area is also rich in folklore and is where most of the authentic indigenous markets, one of the cultural highlights of Ecuador’s Andes are to be found. From here you take one of the most famous train journeys in the world through the Nariz del Diablo (the Devil’s Nose), offering not just a thrilling ride, but spectacular views of the area.

Further south is the beautiful city of Cuenca which not only has a rich artistic and indigenous culture but is also crossed by four rivers and surrounded by gorgeous scenery. The area is also home to Quilotoa with the Quilotoa Loop being a fantastic option for those who enjoy hiking once you have acclimatised to the altitude.
